Metric Calculations

This page details how each of our HRIS metrics are calculated. Our current HRIS metrics are:

Headcount

Our headcount metric shows the number of active employees at specific points in time.

Headcount = Number of active employees on a selected date

  • Time: The number of active employees over a period. This can be broken

down by day, month, quarter, or year. If you are looking at a month, quarter, or

year, headcount is always calculated on the last day of the period, i.e. Jan 31 for

January or Dec 31 for each year.

  • Category: The number of active employees on a specific date broken out by a

demographic like department, ethnicity, and tenure. This can be viewed as either

a pie chart or a bar chart.

  • Single Value: The number of active employees on a specific date.

Hired (HRIS)

Our hired metric shows the number of new hires over a period. This only shows external hires,

employees who have been promoted or changed roles are not included. This metric

counts the number of new hire start dates within the selected period.

Hired = External hires within a certain time frame as defined by your HRIS

  • Time: The number of hires broken down by day, month, quarter, or year.

For example, you can see how many new hires there were in each month of the

previous year. Each month would represent new hires with start dates during

    that month.

  • Category: Total number of new hires across a period broken down by a certain demographic. For example, the number of new hires during the period in each location.
  • Single Value: Total number of new hires across a period.

Departures

Our departures metric shows the number of people who left the organization within a selected

period. This only includes people who left the organization entirely, not people who

changed jobs, departments, locations, etc. This includes both voluntary and involuntary

terminations.

Departures = number of employees who voluntarily or involuntarily left the organization

  • Time: The number of people who left the organization broken down by

day, month, quarter, or year. For example, you can see how many departures

there were in each month of the previous year. Each month would represent

departures with end dates during that month.

  • Category: Total number of departures across a period broken down by

category. For example, the number of departures during the period in each department.

  • Single Value: Total number of new hires across a period.

Turnover

Our turnover metric shows the turnover rate over a specified period. Turnover is calculated as the

number of departures over the period divided by the average headcount over the same

period. Average headcount is calculated as (starting headcount + ending headcount)/2.

Turnover = departures/average headcount *100%

Example turnover calculation:

  • Total departures in 2020 = 30
  • Starting Headcount = Headcount on Jan 1, 2020 = 500
  • Ending Headcount = Headcount on Dec 31, 2020 = 550
  • Average Headcount = (starting headcount + end headcount)/2 = (500+550)/2 = 1050/2 = 525
  • Turnover = departures / average headcount *100% = (30/525)*100% = 5.7%
  • Time: Shows the turnover rates for a specific period broken down by day, month,

quarter, or year. For example, you can view turnover rates for the previous year

broken down my month. Each month would show turnover rates for that month

alone, they are not cumulative. June’s turnover rate would be calculated as

departures in June, divided by the average headcount in June. Summing all of

the months together would get the turnover rate for the entire year.

  • Category: Shows the turnover rate for each group in a category over a specific

time period. For example, turnover for a specific department would be calculated

as: the number of departures in the department during the specific period

divided by the average headcount for that department over the same period.

Example for HR department in 2022:

  • Departures in HR in 2020 = 4
  • Starting Headcount = Headcount on Jan 1, 2020 for HR = 20
  • Ending Headcount = Headcount on Dec 31, 2020 for HR = 22
  • Average Headcount = (starting headcount + end headcount)/2 = (20+22)/2 =
    • 42/2 = 21
  • Turnover = departures / average headcount = (4/21) *100% = 19.0%
  • Single Value: Shows the overall turnover rate for a given period of time.

Average Age

Our average age metric calculates the average age of the selected population at a point in time.

Age is calculated as the selected date minus birth date.

Average Age = sum of ages/# of employees in the demographic

  • Time: Calculates average age across a period and displays the average

age at each day/month/quarter/year. If you are looking at a month, quarter, or

year, the average age is always calculated on the last day of the period, i.e. Jan 31

for January or Dec 31 for each year.

  • Category: Calculates the average age on a specific date across a category. For

example, average age of each department as of today.

  • Single Value: Calculates the average age on the specified date.

Average Tenure

Calculates the average tenure of the selected population at a point in

time. Tenure is calculated as the selected date minus hired date.

Average Tenure = (selected date - hired date) calculated for each employee/# of employees

  • Time: Calculates average tenure across a period and displays the

average tenure at each day/month/quarter/year. If you are looking at a month,

quarter, or year, average tenure is always calculated on the last day of the

period, i.e. Jan 31 for January or Dec 31 for each year.

  • Category: Calculates the average tenure on a specific date across a category.

For example, the average tenure of each department as of today.

  • Single Value: Calculates the average tenure on the specified date.

Total Salary

Calculates the total annualized salary of every active employee at specified

point in time for the selected currency. For example, if there were four people who each

made 100k, the total salary would be 400k.

Total Salary = sum of annualized salaries of selected employees

  • Time: Calculates total annualized salary across a period of time and displays the

total salary at each day/month/quarter/year. If you are looking at a month,

quarter, or year, total salary is always calculated on the last day of the period, i.e.

Jan 31 for January or Dec 31 for each year.

  • Category: Calculates the total annualized salary on a specific date across a

category. For example, total salary of all active employees across departments

as of the end of last month.

  • Single Value: Calculates the total annualized salary of all active employees as of

    the specified date

Average Salary

Calculates the average annualized salary of every active employee at

specified point in time. For example, if there were four people who each made 100k, the

average salary would be 100k.

Average Salary = Sum of salaries/# of employees included in sum

  • Time: Calculates average annualized salary across a period of time and displays

the average salary at each day/month/quarter/year. If you are looking at a

month, quarter, or year, average salary is always calculated on the last day of the

period, i.e. Jan 31 for January or Dec 31 for each year.

  • Category: Calculates the average annualized salary on a specific date across a

category. For example, average salary of all active employees across

departments as of the end of last month.

  • Single Value: calculates the average annualized salary of all active employees as

    of the specified date
